There
are many skills and crafts worldwide that are losing status
as a means of earning a living. However, there are numerous
that are kept alive and recognised as important crafts, in
Kenya The Kikoy Company are one of those few enlightened
companies who encourage such a craft to continue.
The Kikoy Company encouraged a group of women to form together to carry out this
undertaking for all their Kikoys, paying well above the going rate ‘down
town Nairobi’; the Kikoy Company have increased their group to thirty or
more women who between them have over one hundred children. The women are paid
for each Kikoy that they knot, they are able to carry the Kikoys to their houses
and knot in their homes. Not only preserving a craft, The Kikoy Company are now
assisting all these women who can improve their lifestyle tremendously without
detriment or neglect to their children.
